Privacy policy
Last updated 30 October 2026. Applies to the Runtrovert app for Android (and its Wear OS watch app) and to this website.
The short version. Runtrovert has no server and no account. Your runs, routes, places, notes and settings are saved on your phone. We, the people who make Runtrovert, don't receive them, can't see them and don't sell them. The app fetches three things, each of which you can switch off: map tiles, the weather and the Listen list. There are no analytics, no advertising identifiers and no crash reporter that sends anything to us.
Who we are
Runtrovert is made by [developer name and country]. For any question about privacy, write to hello@runtrovert.app.
What the app keeps on your phone
To work as a running app, Runtrovert saves the following in a database on your phone. None of it is sent to us.
- Your runs: the route, distance, time, pace, splits and climb.
- From your phone's sensors: precise location during a run (also with the screen off, which is why the app asks for background location), and step counts and air pressure to fill gaps in the GPS signal and measure climb.
- Heart rate, if you use the watch app, recorded into the run.
- What you tell it: energy and busyness after a run, notes, saved places with their names and tags, training plans and your progress, and your settings.
- Runs you bring in from GPX or FIT files you pick.
Reminders are written and scheduled on the phone. There is no push service and nothing outside your phone knows when or whether you ran.
What the app fetches, and who sees what
The app connects to three services. Like any website, each of them sees your IP address and the request itself. Your route is never sent to any of them.
| Service | What it receives | When | How to turn it off |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenFreeMap (street map tiles, built on OpenStreetMap data) | Requests for the map squares on screen, so it sees which area you're looking at. | While a street map is on screen. | Settings, Plain map. Your route and live position still show, without streets and names. |
| Open-Meteo (weather) | A location rounded to about 1 km. No key, no account, no cookies. | When the home screen needs a forecast. | Settings, the weather switch. |
| GitHub (the Listen list and its cover images) | A download of one file that's the same for everyone, plus the covers of shows you scroll past that didn't ship with the app, one image each, so GitHub could see which shows were on your screen. No location, no identifier, no cookie. | When you open Listen, only if you said yes to fresh lists. | Say no when Listen asks. |
These services are run by others under their own privacy terms. We don't receive anything from them about you.
When you choose to open something else
- Podcasts and shows in Listen open in your own podcast or music app. That app and the show's host see a normal connection, IP address included, like any download. We never see what you play.
- Sponsors pay a flat fee for a place on the labelled "Kit & offers" shelf. They never learn who opened it or what was tapped. Opening an offer takes you to their website, which has its own privacy terms.
- Sharing a run goes through your phone's own share sheet, to the app and person you pick. A shared card leaves the route out unless you switch it on.
- Exporting writes GPX or FIT files to a place you pick. Notes, energy and busyness stay out of those files.
The watch app
The Wear OS app talks to the phone over the direct link between your phone and watch (the Wearable Data Layer that Android provides). Nothing goes through a server of ours, because there isn't one.
Phone backups
If backups are on in your phone's settings, Android includes Runtrovert's data in your phone's own backup to your Google account, so a new phone can restore it. That copy is kept by Google under your account, not by us. Delete the app and its data is gone from your phone; a phone backup keeps a copy until it's replaced.
Payments
"Everything, once" is a one-time purchase through Google Play. Google handles the payment under its own privacy policy. The app only asks the store whether this store account has bought it. We don't receive your card details. Google gives developers an order record for each purchase, which we use only to handle refunds and taxes.
Permissions
- Location (precise, and in the background during a run): to record runs.
- Physical activity: step counts that fill gaps in the GPS signal.
- Notifications: reminders, and distance and time on the lock screen during a run.
Children
Runtrovert is not aimed at children under 13. It collects no personal data from anyone, children included.
Your rights
Because we don't receive or store your data, there's nothing of yours on our side to access, correct or delete. Everything is on your phone, where you can delete runs one by one, export them, or delete the app to remove it all. If you have a question or a complaint, write to us; you can also contact your local data protection authority.
This website
runtrovert.app has no cookies, no analytics and no third-party scripts or fonts. It is hosted on GitHub Pages, and GitHub may log visitors' IP addresses for security, as described in GitHub's privacy statement.
Changes
If the app ever fetches something new or keeps something new, this page changes first and the date at the top moves. The Privacy section in the app's Settings says the same thing.
